Why Telling Your Story Matters

Yesterday, I stumbled upon an Instagram page where the user goes out on the streets of Canada, asking people why they’re living there. I must say, the work they’re doing is truly amazing—they help those on the streets with food, raise donations, and connect them with people who can offer further support.

As I read through the comments, I saw how many people were eager to help and asking how they could contribute to the cause. I paused for a moment, reflecting on how it seems like social media is the only way some people will care. I couldn’t help but think that if these individuals were seen on the streets in person, many would probably turn a blind eye.

This morning, it hit me: the reason people are willing to help is because the individuals were given the opportunity to share their own stories. It made me realize that we all have stories to tell, in whatever way we can express them. But, more importantly, we need to shape the narrative the stories we tell and  how we see ourselves.

We should tell ourselves stories of faith over fear, winning instead of losing, and conquering instead of being defeated—even when it feels like a fiction compared to our current reality. Write the story, read it to yourself, believe it emotionally, and over time, that “delusional” story will become your truth.

Why is it important to write your own story? Because until the lion tells his side, the hunter will always be the hero. Don’t let circumstances, situations, or society dictate your narrative. Take control, and write your own story.

  1. Excellent post. At first i resisted the idea of the story being posted on instagram but then i realized social media is how people hear about things. it is much easier and desirable to me to reach out a hand to an individual rather than a faceless cause, no matter how worthwhile.

    1. Oh yes, I can imagine, the world dynamics as changed a bit and we have to adjust to it, social media is a way to spotlight what’s been done in the corners of the world, so we just have to credit to the people who are doing their own bit
