From Lagos to Sub-Zero Living

Growing up in Lagos, layering wasn’t a concept I gave much thought to—sunshine was all the warmth I needed. But moving to England changed everything. Sub-zero living taught me the art (and necessity) of triple-layer mastery.

Layering isn’t just about piling on clothes—it’s a thoughtful balance of warmth, style, and comfort. Start with a base layer: thermal tops or snug knits that lock in heat. Add a middle layer for insulation—think wool sweaters or fleece-lined hoodies. Finally, seal it all with a top layer like a tailored coat or puffer jacket to block wind and rain.

Accessories are key: gloves, scarves, and thermal socks make all the difference.

This winter, I’m sharing my favorite layering looks—each one tested through chilly commutes and frosty mornings. Swipe through, and let me know which one you love most! Cold weather calls for creativity, after all.

  1. My favorite is the navy coat with the teal hoodie.

Where I live, layering comes in very handy especially for the months of january and february which can be terribly cold. when we lived in northern wisconsin years ago, we bought many items of clothing and gear which made layering work better. it was a necessity there all the time.

very helpful, informative post and great photos, michael.
