Why You Should Never Button the Second Outer Button on a Double-Breasted Suit

There was a time when I used to button the second outer button of my double-breasted suit. I didn’t know any better. But that’s the power of information—now I do. These days, I leave that button undone, and to me, that’s growth.

If you’re wondering why the second outer button should stay unbuttoned, let me explain. There are a few reasons, but today I’ll share two key ones with you:

1. The Suit’s Design

Double-breasted suits are designed with the intention of only fastening the top outer button. Buttoning the lower outer button can disrupt the jacket’s tailored drape, making it look strained and less refined. The clean silhouette and elegant flow of the suit rely on this simple rule.

2. Ease of Movement

Leaving the lower outer button undone ensures better freedom of movement, especially when sitting. Unlike single-breasted jackets, where you unbutton before sitting, the double-breasted design—with its extra fabric—allows you to sit comfortably without having to unfasten anything. Keeping the second button undone prevents the jacket from pulling or puckering awkwardly.

Sometimes, it’s the little details that make the biggest difference. Knowing how to wear a double-breasted suit properly is one of them. And for me, understanding this was a small but meaningful step forward.

By the way, Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?
