The Power of Numbers: How They Shape Our Lives

One of the lessons I’ve learned through my running journey is the importance of numbers. And how they can shape our life for good, Keeping data of my run practise as been helpful with my running journey, over the years of running it has thought me that little steps count and add up be it good or bad.

At some point in my life, I must have questioned why we were made to memorize 1, 2, 3, 4 at a young age. I have come to realize it’s the basis for growth. You can’t measure the growth of what you don’t have the data on, I’ve learned through my run that putting things into numbers plays a big role.

At some point, I battled with reading the Bible, because after reading 5 verses, I would fall asleep. Then I started using a timer. Within a short period of time, everything changed.

Putting my activities into numbers has really changed and shaped my life for good.

It has helped me grow and cultivate good habits. It’s natural for us humans to get inspired at the beginning of a new routine and get bored along the way, but numbers inspire.

I started learning French with Duolingo last year. In the last 2 months, the only thing that has kept me going is the fear of losing my daily streak. My schedule recently doubled up, but for the fear of losing the streak that counts, I find the time to practice every day.

I won’t lie to you; at the moment, I will say I’ve just been practicing to keep the streak going and I’ve not been paying attention to the classes like I used to do, but I do my best to show up to the class, and I know the lessons are in my subconscious.

Numbers move in geometric progression; you start with 1 before you know it, you’re on 2, then 5, then 10. If you want to pray more, start praying habitually for 5 mins a day. If you want to run more, start with 1 km a day or a week. If you want to read more, start with a page a day or a chapter. If you want to save more money, start by habitually putting a certain amount out regardless of how small it is.

The key is to start, make it a habit, stay committed, record and journal it. Before you know it, the number will inspire your growth. Just show up to the starting line and put it in numbers
