Growing up in a Yoruba household, the wisdom of our ancestors often found its way into our daily lives through proverbs and adages. One such saying, “A kì í wo ago aláago ṣiṣẹ́,” translates to “Don’t carry out your duties using someone else’s timepiece.” In simpler terms, it urges us not to compare ourselves to others. This timeless advice resonates deeply, especially in pursuits like running, where individual journeys vary greatly.
When I first began my running journey, the bustling iconic Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge in Lagos, became my sanctuary. Surrounded by fellow runners and fitness enthusiasts, I soon learned a valuable lesson: the fastest way to burnout and injuries is trying to keep pace with others. Each runner on that bridge had their own goals, starting points, and fitness levels. Attempting to match someone else’s pace only hindered my own progress and enjoyment.

Initially, I fell into the trap of competing against every passerby, but I soon realized the futility of this approach. My best runs occurred when I listened to my body and maintained my own rhythm. Slowly building momentum, I found my stride, adjusting pace as needed. It was a liberating feeling to discover my own flow. Just as in life, there is a rhythm to running—one that cannot be dictated by comparison or competition.
This lesson extends beyond running—it’s a metaphor for life. Just as each runner has a unique journey on the bridge, we all have our own paths to follow. Comparing ourselves to others only detracts from our personal growth and fulfillment. While it’s natural to be inspired by others’ achievements, we must remember that our journeys are our own.

Life, like running, has its ups and downs. Some days, the path is smooth; other days, it’s a struggle. But every experience shapes our overall journey and teaches us valuable lessons. We can’t fully understand someone else’s story or the challenges they’ve overcome to reach their goals. Therefore, it’s essential to celebrate our own victories and learn from others without comparing ourselves unfairly.
In the end, we are the heroes of our own journeys. Embracing our individuality and learning from those around us enriches our experiences and propels us forward. So, whether we’re on the track or navigating life’s twists and turns, let’s embrace our own pace and trust in the rhythm of our journey.
