Growing up in a large, bustling family had its own unique charm. I was one of five siblings, and with three cousins often around, our household was always lively. Add to this mix a small herd of goats and sheep, and you get a picture of just how vibrant our home life was. To us, those goats and sheep were more than just animals—they were family.
While most of our neighbors had dogs and cats as pets, my dad had a particular fondness for goats and sheep. He cherished them dearly, so much so that he never entertained the idea of eating them, despite the occasional goat ending up in a pot of soup. My mom, on the other hand, could never bring herself to eat them. She saw them as part of our family and felt it would be a betrayal to do so. Her emotional connection to them was profound. As for me, I adored those animals the most when they were transformed into delicious Asun.
My dad’s devotion to his pets was remarkable. On his way home from work, he would often stop by local shops to gather bean shafts for them. He took meticulous care of each animal, washing and checking them regularly. Looking back, I can confidently say he genuinely loved his pets and would go to great lengths for their well-being.
Recently, I came across Psalm 23:1, where David says, “The Lord is my shepherd.” Instantly, an image of my dad with his beloved goats and sheep sprang to mind. It was followed by Isaiah 49:15, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” These verses reminded me of the unwavering care my father had for his animals and how it mirrors God’s care for us.
I share this story to remind you that, no matter how challenging your week might be or how tough the season, just as my earthly father never neglected his goats, God will never neglect you. He is always there, watching over you.
