Have You Ever Had Surgery? What For?

Yes, I’ve had surgery — but not the kind you might expect. There were no hospital beds or scalpels involved. The surgery I had was internal, emotional, and transformational. I had to rebuild my confidence from the inside out — piece by piece, layer by layer.

There wasn’t a single dramatic event that led to it. It was more of a slow realization: I was living life on autopilot, constantly doubting myself, comparing, overthinking, and seeking validation in all the wrong places. So I decided to do something about it. I chose to “operate” — to remove the fear, stitch up the self-doubt, and strengthen my sense of self.

Here are the four key things I did that changed everything:

1. Spending Time Alone

This was the first big step. I started taking myself out, to coffee shops, museums, even solo walks without music. At first, it felt awkward, but over time, it became empowering. Being alone with my thoughts helped me tune out the noise and really hear myself. I began to like — even love — my own company.

2. Prioritising My Health

It’s wild how much your confidence shifts when you take care of your body and mind. I cleaned up my habits: moved more, ate better, journaled, and slept like it was sacred. I started treating myself like someone I truly valued and that self-respect blossomed into deeper self-love.

3. Staying In My Lane

Comparison used to drain me. I’d scroll and spiral, thinking I wasn’t enough, not smart enough, not pretty enough, not successful enough. But I learned that someone else’s beauty, brilliance, or success doesn’t take away from mine. Their lane is theirs. Mine is mine. And there’s enough room for all of us to shine.

4. Focusing On My Goals

Confidence doesn’t just come from affirmations — it comes from direction. I got clear on what I wanted and made a plan. Having a purpose, even a small one, gave me something to move toward. And with every step forward, my self-trust grew.

So no, I haven’t had surgery in the traditional sense, but I have cut out what wasn’t serving me, and I’m still healing and growing every day. Confidence isn’t a fixed trait, it’s a practice. And it starts the moment you decide you’re worth the effort.
