Four Hours to Showtime

I still remember the knot in my stomach the morning of the show. I’d booked the date, designed posters, and kicked off ticket sales weeks in advance—full of excitement and confidence that everything would fall into place. But on the day of the event, with doors opening at 4 PM, the university hadn’t signed off on our use of the venue. It wasn’t until noon—just four hours before curtain—that I finally got the green light.

That window of uncertainty felt endless. What if they never approved it? What if all the marketing, the logistics, and the buzz we’d built went to waste? Every “what if” echoed in my mind. Yet, even in the midst of that panic, I knew I had a choice: pull back, cancel everything, and concede to fear… or lean into the risk and trust that I’d set things in motion for a reason.

When the approval finally came, we sprinted to set up: lights rigged, soundchecked, seats arranged. By 3:45 PM, the hall was buzzing with anticipation. And at 4 PM sharp, we opened our doors to a full house. Watching the spotlight find its mark and hearing the applause swell—it was exhilarating. More than just a successful show, it was proof that sometimes the scariest bets pay off.

Looking back, I realize that I wouldn’t have known how far I could push—nor how capable I truly was—if I hadn’t placed that risky bet on myself. Dreams don’t unfold in the safety of certainty; they grow in the space between doubt and daring. So the next time you’re tempted to shy away, remember: your greatest opportunities often lie just beyond the edge of what feels “safe.” Take the risk. Make the leap. You might just surprise yourself.

When is the last time you took a risk? How did it work out?
