Losing my mum was a significant life event I never planned for, and it completely changed how I see life. Sitting at her service of songs, listening to people share memories of her, I realized just how much of an impact she had on others. They spoke about her style, her ability to motivate, and how her smile could light up a room—even in the midst of her struggles.
One story, in particular, stuck with me. The man who sold her casket shared how, during the early days of his business when he was struggling and ready to give up, my mum was one of the people who encouraged him to keep going. The irony of it all hit me—she had unknowingly motivated someone who would one day provide her final resting place.

That day, I couldn’t help but think about how people often wait until a funeral to deeply reflect on someone’s life and impact. It felt unfair, but it also shifted something in me. It made me realize how fast life moves, how fleeting everything is. Her passing has pushed me to live with more purpose and intention, to cherish the people around me, and to be deeply present in my relationships.
More than anything, it has made me aware that we are all here for only a short while. Any moment could be the last time we see or hear from each other. That understanding has changed me, making me more mindful of the connections I nurture and the legacy I leave behind.
