Boxing Day – A Tradition of Togetherness

Growing up, one of my favorite family traditions revolved around Boxing Day, the 26th of December. It was a day that held a special place in our hearts, thanks to my grandad. For as long as I can remember, he made it a point to bring the entire family together on this day. It was more than just a gathering—it was an event, a celebration, and a reunion all rolled into one.

Every Boxing Day, cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family would come together under one roof. For me, it was a day to reconnect with relatives I hadn’t seen all year. We would laugh, share stories, eat delicious meals, and, as kids, eagerly await the tradition of uncles handing out money—a small but cherished gesture that made the day even more exciting. The atmosphere was always filled with love, warmth, and the kind of joy that can only come from being surrounded by family.

But like all things, life changes. My grandad is no longer with us, and adulthood has made it harder for everyone to keep the tradition alive. We’ve all grown up, moved to different places, and found ourselves caught up in the busyness of life. Boxing Day doesn’t quite feel the same anymore, and sometimes I feel like adulthood has robbed me of that magic.

Yet, there’s still a sense of connection, even if it’s not the same as before. Thanks to social media, we’re able to stay in touch, share updates, and remind ourselves that, despite the distance, we’re still a part of each other’s journey. It’s not the same as sitting around the same table or hearing the laughter of my cousins in the same room, but it’s a reminder that the bonds we created during those Boxing Day gatherings still exist.
