Building Beyond Bricks

Growing up, my late mother embodied the essence of generosity. With a warm smile, she shared everything she had, often asserting that we were doing the Lord’s work. In her later years, she got into construction and housing projects, employing laborers from neighboring towns and those from Benin Republic in pursuit of better opportunities. Beyond providing food, she willingly increased their wages, guided by a simple yet profound rationale: “I have five kids, and I hope that others will show mercy to my children wherever they may find themselves someday.” It was amusing, albeit sometimes inconvenient, when she’d ask us to share our possessions with strangers – a testament to her belief in willingly sharing, be it service, food, clothes, or money.

Reflecting on my early experiences in England, I encountered strangers on trains and my friends’ parents offered assistance, helping me out in difficult situations, and I understood they’re the fruits of her seeds.

Giving, I’ve learned, is like planting seeds; a harvest will eventually be reaped. We get disappointed when we give and in return the recipient can’t do the same for us if the tables are turned. Reciprocity, however, shouldn’t be expected from those we help. The true essence of giving lies in its selflessness. Those who can reciprocate often don’t need our help initially. It’s not a transaction but a genuine act of generosity. If we pay attention, we’ll realize that we, too, have been helped by others whom we can’t assist.

In a world often seen through the lens of scarcity, waiting for excess before giving is a fallacy. Time and money may be perceived as scarce, but the act of giving doesn’t demand surplus. Sometimes, we measure our gifts solely in monetary terms, but giving can take various forms – valuable information, opportunities, knowledge, listening ears and meaningful friendships.

In the grand scheme of life, where we all contribute to the betterment of it, expanding our notion of giving becomes crucial – offering time, money, clothing, assistance, advice, love, and compassion.

Extend mentorship to those navigating paths you’ve once walked, sharing the knowledge you now possess. Remember, the life you currently enjoy was is someone else’s prayer. Let’s unite in making the world a better place, sowing seeds of kindness that will undoubtedly yield a harvest.
