The Art of Grace

In the bustling city of Lagos, I experienced a chapter of my life that remains etched in my memory – the time I shared a flat with my cousin and a close friend, all of us immersed in the world of creativity. The walls echoed with laughter, the common area buzzed with vibrant conversations and banters

One unforgettable tale revolves around the misplacement of ATM cards. My cousin lamented his knack for misplacing cards, having replaced three within a year. Surprisingly, I echoed the sentiment, admitting to a similar fate. Our third musketeer, the voice of reason, chided us for our apparent carelessness, vowing to use his card until its natural expiration. Fate, however, had other plans, and he soon found himself replacing his card three times in a mere two months.

The lesson from this taught me the importance of having mercy on others and being gracious in our judgments. Often, we believe we can navigate life flawlessly from the observer’s seat. Yet, when handed the wheel, we realize the unpredictability of our own journey.

Reflecting on the biblical tale of Jesus and his disciples, I find parallels with our own tendencies. Like Peter, who adamantly declared loyalty but faltered in the face of adversity, we too stumble on paths we once condemned in others.

The narrative expands beyond personal anecdotes, emphasizing the need to withhold judgment. Condemning others arises from knowledge without the accompanying wisdom. Understanding that knowledge is knowing, but wisdom is the challenging act of doing, compels us to adopt a more compassionate stance.

As the age-old adage goes, “Do unto others what you want done to you.” Mercy should prevail over judgment, recognizing that the paths we criticize may become our own. In the grand tapestry of life, the role of judge is not ours to assume – a reminder to focus on our own journeys and extend grace to those navigating their unique paths.
