Coming into the limelight in the early 1900s, brown flight jackets made with leather were worn by aviation and military officers with a notable mention being the German Air Force during the World War I. The contemporary leather jacket was conceived in 1928 by a Manhattan based raincoat manufacturer, Irving Schott, who designed a motorbike jacket for Harley Davidson. 

The jacket was specifically created to protect riders from the elements and accidents. While the leather jacket could not provide complete protection against a sledgehammer or crash against a pavement, it is fared better than denim or alternative clothing. Subsequently, during World War II, the flight jacket, now known as the bomber, was prized for its warming ability as it was designed for open cockpits.


There are different kinds of leather jackets and they can complement various outfits, playing supporting and starring roles in a fashion ensemble. Leather jackets are great piece to have as they exude class and help make a statement. 


The best leather jackets are not cheap and one has to see them as a fashion investment as they have the most longevity and durability in the world of fast fashion. Their significant advantage in durability lay in their composition. Leather consists of a solid mat of fibers that are pressed together. Because there is nothing to unravel, if the surface undergoes a deep cut, the rest of the fabric remains intact while the damage remains localised. Also due to its composition, these jackets provide protection during cold seasons.

For a semi-formal look or very causal look, a leather jacket can inject your wardrobe with great versatility due to its wide range of pairing options. For a formal look, a jacket with minimal or no details is always a great fit.
