Her Royal Majesty

Over a week ago, the world  witnessed the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Since I am resident in the United Kingdom, I was privileged to witness first hand how much she meant to the British people. She was a symbol of their cultural heritage. I was particularly moved by the outpouring of love towards her as people traded their fondest memories of her.

For me, (even though me and Mama Charly no too close like that), I will always remember her for the display of elegance and class she always showed through the way she dressed. Even though she was quite conservative in her style, she succeeded in carving out a niche for herself while at it.

Although the power of the throne was why she became very popular, I have always seen the Queen as a fashion icon. Mummy Pounds  managed to define her unique fashion style throughout the course of her lifetime.

Let us play a game; close your eyes for ten seconds and take a mental picture of the Queen. I do not live in your mind but I can see clearly what you saw. It was the smiling face of the Queen probably waving at the crowd with gloved hands, putting on a fascinator(which is the name of her hat), with a pair of diamonds earrings and a matching necklace to go with it.

How else can you define style? She was so persistent with her public image that we now have pictures of her on the wall of our minds. Her customized black Launer handbags as well as her heirloom brooches are also worthy of mention.

From puffed sleeve dresses to neatly tailored dress coat with rich colors, the Queen effortlessly succeeded in building a lasting image and identity  of herself.

I wrote in a previous article that we are all vain. How we want to appear,  and be perceived is a bit of a vanity fair.  But the Queen clothed hers with grace, calm, poise and panache —  a true definition of “royalty no dey loud.”

I am glad she lived long enough for me to witness her sense of style and fashion. Make I no lie, Mama you get swag abeg. May her soul rest in peace.
